Cut down on the red meat you’re eating, and you could also be reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes.
Eat meat just twice a week and instead eat more plant-based proteins and you’ll lower your diabetes risk by 30 percent, say researchers from Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health.
They assessed the impact of meat-eating on 216,000 participants in the Nurses Health Study over 36 years. All red meat—processed and unprocessed—increased the risk of type 2 diabetes, and the biggest meat-eaters had a 62 percent raised risk compared to
those who ate meat rarely. Every daily serving increased the risk of diabetes 46 percent.
Substituting one serving for another protein source, such as nuts or legumes, cut the risk by a third.
