Ginger can combat inflammation and could be especially helpful for people with auto-immune disease.
It boosts the power of neutrophil white blood cells and makes them more resistant to inflammatory processes known as NETosis (neutrophil extracellular trap), say researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
They gave 20mg ginger supplements to healthy volunteers and after just seven days their neutrophil functioning had improved.
Many diseases display neutrophil overactivity, and that is especially the case in people with auto-immune diseases, the researchers say.
Ginger supplements can be taken alongside other medications that people may already be taking, the researchers add.
