A Patient’s Cancer Story – # 01

My friend was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in October, last week cancer-free, I attended her wedding in Dana Point. Her Story.........

My Cancer Journey: Hope, Gratitude, and Being My Own Advocate

I am 81 years old, and on July 28, 2025, my life changed when I was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer.   Initially, doctors believed I had liver cancer because tumors were found in my liver, pelvis, hip, and bones. No tumors were found in my breast, which made the diagnosis surprising. I had always been diligent about my health with annual exams, routine blood work, and an active lifestyle. My only symptoms were fatigue and persistent middle back pain. A liver biopsy revealed the cancer originated in my left breast and had spread throughout my body.

The diagnosis came as a shock. My first question was “Why me?”

I immediately began researching every option for treatment. My medical team prescribed estrogen blockers and supporting medication, while we also explored ways to strengthen my body naturally. I focused on nutrition, supplements, meditation, stress reduction, and immune support. I also explored frequency-based therapies and complementary approaches.

I discovered Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. One important benefit is that they offer a free consultation. Patients can send medical records, scans, and lab results for review and receive a complimentary evaluation, often by Zoom, to discuss treatment options. Oasis of Hope has treated patients worldwide for over 60 years. What stood out to me is that each patient is treated based on their specific diagnosis. They do not use a one- size-fits-all approach. Every treatment plan is personalized based on medical history, test results, and individual needs. Their integrative approach may include nutritional therapy, IV treatments, hyperthermia (thermal therapy), immune support, and other therapies designed to support the body alongside conventional care.

One of the most encouraging parts of my journey has been my cancer marker improvement. It was originally 147 (normal range 0-4). After beginning treatment and care through Oasis of Hope, it dropped to 2.5. That change gave me renewed hope. While every case is different, I am deeply grateful for every improvement and every day I am given.

Cancer does not always follow a predictable path. Even those who take good care of themselves can be diagnosed unexpectedly.  My message is simple: be your own advocate.

Listen to your body. Keep asking questions. Don’t ignore symptoms, even if they seem small. Earlier detection can make a difference. I’ve also learned that mindset matters. Gratitude matters. How we care for ourselves matters. While we cannot control everything, we can choose how we respond. I focus on positive thinking, faith, prayer, healthy habits, and finding joy each day.  Every day is precious. None of us knows how much time we have. Love, gratitude, and kindness matter more than ever.

Breast cancer is not automatically a death sentence. There is hope, there are options, and there are reasons to keep going. Instead of asking only “Why me?” I now ask, “What can I learn from this?” and “How can I become stronger and more grateful for life?”

Cancer changed my life, but it did not take away my joy. It taught me to value every sunrise, every hug, and every moment with loved ones. Today I continue my wellness journey and remain grateful for my support system, and every day I am given. If my story helps even one person, I hope it encourages you to advocate for your health, manage stress, nourish your body, and never lose hope.

I do not know what tomorrow brings. What I do know is that today I am alive, grateful.  If you are facing a diagnosis, do not give up. Ask questions, seek answers, build support, and care for your mind, body, and spirit.

Every day is a gift. Make the most of it.
