A trio of nutrients can improve some of the symptoms of autism.
They combine to improve signaling in the brain’s synapses, and this can result in better social behavior, say scientists at Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
The three—zinc, serine, and branched-chain amino acids, such as eucine, isoleucine, and valine—improve synaptic signaling in the brain, and reduce amygdala activity, which are commonly seen in autism.
But the nutrients didn’t have such a big effect when they were taken individually. Only the synergistic interplay of all three made a difference, the researchers found when they tested the nutrients individually and in combination on groups of mice.
Although each nutrient had some effect at very high doses, the combination improved brain health at quite low doses, they said.
