Want to live a long and healthy life?
You can increase your chances with the F-word—that’s flavonoids.
The more flavonoid-rich foods and drinks, such as apples, tea, dark chocolate and berries, in your diet, the greater your chances of living a long life and one that avoids chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and neurological disease.
The key could be in the variety of flavonoids we consume—different colours and types also make a difference and could have more impact than relying on just one type of flavonoid source, say researchers from Edith Cowan University in Australia.
Flavonoids are found in plant foods like tea, blueberries, strawberries, oranges, apples, grapes, and red wine and dark chocolate.
To assess the health benefits of flavonoids, the researchers tracked over 120,000 participants aged from 40 to 70 years for over a decade. They discovered that consuming around 500 mg of flavonoids every day—the amount is in two cups of tea—lowered mortality levels by around 16 percent, and there was around a 10 percent reduced risk of CVD, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory disease.
The researchers discovered the benefits were even greater in those who got their flavonoids from a variety of sources. Different flavonoids have different effects; some improve blood pressure, some help with cholesterol levels and others decrease inflammation, for instance, so consuming plenty of different flavonoid-rich foods and drinks every day is the best approach.
