Remember the P-word to keep your heart healthy.
Polyphenols, plant compounds that are in tea, coffee, berries, nuts, olive oil and whole grains, are essential for our cardiovascular system, a major review has concluded.
People who regularly eat a polyphenol-rich diet have a much lower risk of heart problems, and they also have healthier blood pressure and cholesterol markers, say researchers from King’s College London.
After tracking the health and diets of more than 3,100 people for 10 years, they found that heart disease risk fell with the amount of polyphenols in the diet. Best of all, it’s never too late to start. Making small adjustments to your diet, and consuming more polyphenol-rich drinks and food, make a difference, and can reduce the risk of heart disease as we get older.
